Quality Magazine - Quality is a monthly business publication serving the quality assurance and process improvement needs of more than 64,000 manufacturing professionals. The magazine reports on the use of sound metrology methods, statistical analysis and process improvement techniques to significantly improve quality on the shop floor and in manufacturing planning.
Engineering and Manufacturing Links
Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Server -The CQI server, at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University, is provided in support of worldwide efforts in quality improvement and education in quality. It offers software from a variety of sources for public use, including an attribute chart simulator, a simple Pareto, histogram, scatter diagram package, a variables chart simulator and a flowchart of the process of choosing a control chart type. A tutorial is also available, on quality control tools, featuring detailed tutorials on the tools, a synopsis of the seven quality tools, and a case study overview. Access to a variety of files is given, together with keyword search facilities. E-mail discussion lists are accessible, and links to areas of related interest are provided.
Center for the New Engineer - The Center for the New Engineer, based at the George Mason University, was established in August 1993 as an ongoing, interdisciplinary investigation into the education of engineers and scientists for the knowledge society of the 21st century. The centers objective is to develop and test Internet based training and education technologies.
Juran Institute - The Juran Institute provides research, consulting, and training facilities in the field of managing for quality. The Juran Institute server provided details of the company and its training products and consulting services. In addition, there are some 30 full-text articles from the Institute freely available, and a further number of articles by Dr. Juran in Microsoft Word format which may be freely downloaded. Workshop details, links to other quality sites, and contact information are also provided.
Model-Based Manufacturing Integration: A Paradigm For Virtual Manufacturing Systems - Full text of paper published in Computers Ind. Engng Vol. 27, Nos 1-4, pp. 357-360, 1994 by Parks CM, Koonce DA, Rabelo LC, Judd RP, Sauter JA. The abstract of the paper is as follows; "Current manufacturing system design methodologies produce multiple models of the eventual manufacturing system. These models reflect either the designers’ view of some subsystem, like materials handling, some level of abstraction, or some developmental stage in the design of the system. These models serve to break the complex system design into smaller, more manageable sized problems. This paper makes a case for the need to integrate these models before the physical system is constructed."
Design Management Institute - Founded in 1975, the Design Management Institute (DMI) has become the leading resource and international authority on design management. DMI has earned a reputation worldwide as a multifaceted resource, providing invaluable know-how, tools and training through its conferences, seminars, membership program, and publications. DMI is a nonprofit organization that seeks to heighten awareness of design as an essential part of business strategy.
How to control a lean manufacturing system - A lean manufacturing system is one which meets high throughput or service demands with very little inventory. This document considers two control methods, kanban and CONWIP (Constant Work-In-Progress) in this context, and then presents a hybrid control policy where the CONWIP control is supplemented with secondary kanban cells.
Exploring ISO 14000 and Integrating Management Systems - This site, part of the MGMT Alliances Inc. pages, covers both the ISO 14000 and ISO 9000 series of standards. It contains four full-text articles:
International Standards for Environmental Systems: ISO 14000
ISO 14000: a Reality Check
Environmental Priority Setting: One of the Greater Challenges of ISO 14001
Environmental Management Systems: The Legal Framework
Standards and Guidelines for both the ISO 14000 and ISO 9000 series are given, together with the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001/2/3 elements. An ISO 14001 Pizza and an ISO 9000 Pizza are on the menu, with the aim of making information on the standards digestible by being consumed one slice at a time. A set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is listed.
